The #fridayflash Report – Week 30

The #fridayflash Report – Week 30: "

Before NaNo rolled around we were hitting about sixty stories a week for #fridayflash. Looks like the NaNoBite (sorry, could not resist) has finally passed and we’re back to about normal level of participation. As of this moment we have sixty stories in the Collector. Woo hoo, back to full strength.

I think there are a few more floating around out there. We usually end up posting a few late arrivals. If your story is not in the list please add it to the Collector and then I’ll add it here. I’ve posted new listings as late as a Wednesday, but obviously the sooner you get it listed, the better.

I don’t usually discuss my private life here, but I feel recent circumstances warrant a bit if explanation. If I have been a bit remiss in visiting your stories and posting comments please forgive me. My wife is currently in the hospital (second time in three weeks) so much of my time is taken up with hospital visits and trying to keep the house from falling apart in her absence. I try to read a story or two when I can, but have been noticeably missing in action both on #fridayflash and 12 Days commenting. She is doing much better and I hope things will settle back to normal soon.

I had no time to write a new story this week, so I posted one from my files. While not exactly seasonal, I hope you enjoy it, as well as all the other terrific stories we have on tap for you this week. Hope all of you on the East Coast are surviving the big snow. You are in my thoughts. ~jon

The #fridayflash Report – Week 24

The #fridayflash Report – Week 24: "
We seem to be down a little this week, with just 48 stories in the Collector as I put this together. I know of at least two stories not listed, so the count may go up later today. Be sure to check back for any late arrivals. I think NaNoWriMo may have caused a bit of a drop off, but that’s OK. People need to prioritize and there is never any pressure for #fridayflash. Post ‘em when you’ve got ‘em.

I’m going to talk to Susan, my personal technology guru, to see if we can add two new features to the Collector. Some people have discovered that they can browse through the listing there and cut and paste the links to go see the stories before the list get generated. I’ll see if we can convert that field to an actual link without breaking the report generator. I also would like to add a checkbox for new participants, so we can easily find debut participants. I think it would pay dividends if we make sure new authors in #firdayflash get encouragement from the rest of us.

I can now generate the list in alphabetical and reverse alphabetical order. Fair warning – next week’s list will be in reverse alphabetical order, so plan accordingly. ;)

Finally, I’d like to ask again how cutting back on retweets is effecting everyone. It still seems to be working nicely for me. Are you all still getting good response, or has the cutback on tweeting hurt your readership?

Enough with the business meeting. I move we adjourn to actually reading the stories.

The #fridayflash Report - Week 21

The #fridayflash Report - Week 21: "

The #fridayflash Report

By now you know the routine. It is inevitable that I've missed someone's story, so I'll just say there are at least 63 stories this week. Stay tuned for a final count. If I missed yours don't hate me, just ping me down in the comments or on Twitter and I'll add it.

Conversely, if I've included your story and for some reason you don't want to be on the list, ping me for that too, and I'll take you off. My assumption is that if you tweet under the #fridayflash hashtag you want to be included. But sometimes other people may tweet the link to your story, which can lead to a misunderstanding on my part. That almost happened last week.

Three quick reminders that can help both you and me:

1. Use a URL shortening service. Your links tend to get mauled upon retweeting if you don't.

2. Use links to your post, not to your overall blog. That way people will find your story if they are browsing thorough the archives. I will no longer adjust links in the report. It just takes too much time.

3. If you format your tweet Title, by John Doe it makes harvesting the info needed for this report a whole lot easier. I am going to see if I can get folks who do this canonized. :)

Lots of great stories, as always. So get out there and start reading!
